Biotechnology - High Tech High
Student Activities - CONSERVATION FORENSICS
DNA Barcoding African Bushmeat
Welcome to the collaborative study in conservation forensics involving High Tech High, San Diego and the Center for Reproduction of Endangered Species, San Diego Zoological Society. The project is being directed by Dr. Oliver Ryder of CRES and Dr. Jay Vavra of HTH. This program is currently being sponsored by Invitrogen Corporation and the Regional Occupational Program. Other partners include the Jane Goodall Institute.

The goals of the program involve developing methods to identify dried meat and fur samples using DNA isolation, amplification, sequencing and alignment techniques. Students are exposed to important theoretical and practical exercises in bioinformatics, molecular biology, forensics, international policy and conservation biology.

Discussion has been underway to coordinate an exchange program between the American University of Nigeria in Yola and High Tech High. This will involve HTH students travelling to Nigeria to coordinate forensic techniques with Nigerian students of primatologist Dr. Jannette Wallis. Dr. Wallis also serves on the Bushmeat Crisis Taskforce.
